Workplace bullying is a risk to health and safety. It can occur wherever people work together in all types of workplaces. It is best dealt with by taking steps to prevent it from occurring and responding quickly if it does occur. The longer the bullying behaviour continues, the more difficult it is to address and the harder it becomes to repair working relationships.

Our Equal Employment Opportunity, anti-bullying training for managers focuses on the responsibility as the custodians of your organisation’s workplace culture, or your students, and the key elements of the manager’s / trainer’s role in preventing and effectively managing bullying, harassment and discrimination issues.

This workshop will bring to life real workplace situations using a simulated workplace environment where participants take part in real world situations role plays.

Participants will have the opportunity to explore and apply effective leadership techniques and will learn about three leadership styles that heighten the risk of workplace issues and potential litigation.

Topics addressed include:

  • The role of management in preventing and dealing with allegations of discrimination, harassment and bullying in the workplace
  • The intent of EEO legislation and anti-bullying guidelines
  • The importance of management and team culture and leadership style
  • What is unlawful discrimination and sexual harassment
  • What constitutes workplace bullying/harassment and what is appropriate performance management
  • Responding to issues observed
  • Handling complaints correctly

This course is designed to be part of  a series called “Safety First.”

    Legislative requirements and your responsibilities
Workplace bullying can be carried out in a variety of ways including in person, through email, text messages, internet chat rooms, instant messaging or other social media channels. In some cases workplace bullying may escalate beyond the workplace and normal working hours. Workplace bullying can be directed at a single worker or group of workers and be carried out by one or more workers. It can occur: sideways between workers downwards from managers to workers upwards from workers to supervisors or managers. It can also be directed at or perpetrated by other people at the workplace, for example clients, patients, students, customers and members of the public. Everyone at the workplace has a work health and safety duty and can help to ensure workplace bullying does not occur. 'Health' is defined in the Work Health and Safety (National Uniform Legislation) Act - WHS (NUL) Act - as both physical and psychological health.

Impact of Discrimination and Bullying on Organisation
Bullying is a serious issue in workplaces across Australia and a risk factor for anxiety, depression and suicide. Workplace bullying doesn't just hurt those involved. The wider workplace also feels the effects through lost productivity, increased absenteeism, poor morale, and time spent documenting, pursuing or defending claims. It is estimated to cost Australian organisations between $6 billion and $36 billion a year.

Preventing Discrimination and Bullying at the Workplace
Organisations can minimise the risk of workplace discrimination and bullying by taking a proactive approach for early identification of such behaviours and situations likely to increase the risk of workplace discrimination or bullying occurring. Organisations should implement control measures to manage these risks, and monitor and review the effectiveness of these measures.

Dealing with Discrimination and Bullying at the Workplace
While all staff members have a responsibility to address issues of discrimination, harassment and bullying, supervisors and managers have a special responsibility to inform staff members when their behaviour may be in breach of policies, and address any potential issues at the earliest opportunity. The outcome of early action is a safe and harmonious workplace that potentially avoids more formal processes in the future.
